Advice for Working From Home

I think that by now between doing online classes from March to the end of April and having an eight week virtual internship, I have learned a few things on how to work from home! If you haven’t had the chance to check out my other blog post where I reflect on my virtual internship, I will have it linked here for your reference.

Tips for Working from Home

1) Establish a Routine

I cannot emphasize how important establishing a routine is. I personally love having a relaxing morning routine because I find that it sets the tone for the rest of the day. I hate feeling rushed and prefer a slower morning.

During my internship, I typically woke up at around 7:15 AM everyday. My morning routine consisted of waking up, making my bed, changing into real clothes, putting on my everyday jewelry, opening my blinds, making coffee, doing my eyebrows, and journaling.

I enjoyed wearing “real” clothes and putting on my rings and earrings every morning because it gave me a sense of normalcy.

2) Get Active

I found myself going on 20 minute walks in my neighborhood in between meetings. Being outside and stretching my legs made a world of a difference, especially when I have been sitting at a desk for hours on end! After work, I also found that I needed to work out to just clear my head and move my body!

3) Invest in a Computer Mouse

This tip might sound kind of weird, but using a mouse is such a game-changer! A mouse just makes things simpler when navigating different files and all of the different windows you have open on your computer. This mouse from Amazon is the one that I used for work.

4) Write Stuff Down

I personally am a proponent for putting pen to paper. I love handwriting my to-do lists and having a physical planner. Something that I’d like to advise is to keep your to-do lists separate.

For my internship, I had a mini legal pad where I wrote down work-related tasks. But I also had my personal planner where I wrote down personal tasks that were completely unrelated to work. It was nice to keep the two lists separate - both for organizational purposes and for your sanity!

I hope you found these tips insightful! I know that I will definitely continue to be utilizing these tips for the upcoming semester of online classes.
