Miami: Spring Break 2020

This spring break was my first college spring break where I actually went somewhere! I wanted to go to Miami to escape the cold Michigan weather. I went with a close friend, Hannah, who I knew would be a great travel buddy. We actually went to Vietnam together in 2018 so we were already accustomed to each other's travel habits.

We went for 6 days and 5 nights in early March. I would say that our trip was a nice balance of fun and relaxing. Our favorite thing to do was go to the beach, which we managed to do everyday. It wasn’t as hot as we would have liked, but nonetheless we appreciated being in warm weather.

So I normally go to Florida with my family in the summer for vacation but I hadn’t actually been in two years. We spend the majority of our time in Naples and not in Miami. So I took this spring break as an opportunity to do some of the things that I have always wanted to do (like visiting Vizcaya Museum and Gardens!).

Tips

This was the first time that Hannah and I had ever used Airbnb. I think Airbnbs are a great and cost-effective option for people on a budget (ie college students). As two girls, we wanted an Airbnb that allowed us to have the space to ourselves completely and a place that was nice and clean. We enjoyed our stay at both of our Airbnbs! Both hosts were great at communicating and were very accommodating. Our requests for extra towels were immediately met and we were very appreciative of how responsive and accommodating our hosts were.

One thing that I would recommend however is to take into consideration location. Both of our Airbnbs were a 20 minute drive from all the places we wanted to go to and those Ubers added up! Ultimately, we should have done more research into the best location to stay. We booked our Airbnbs in January because we were stressed and wanted to book a place fast.

Highlights

1) Little Havana/Calle Ocho

This is a super cute area to explore! Hannah and I really enjoyed just walking around and taking pictures of all the different signs, art, and murals. We started our Little Havana adventure by getting some Cuban coffee. We went to a place called La Coloda Gourmet. My coffee was $10. Was it worth $10? No, but I ordered one because I never had Cuban coffee before. We ended our Little Havana adventure with dinner at Versailles, an iconic Cuban restaurant. I highly recommend checking out, as service is fast and prices are reasonable!

3) Art Deco District/Ocean Drive

Hannah and I started our day getting brunch at Bacon Bitch. The place is super cute and I absolutely love the vibes with the different neon signs. Bacon Bitch is on Collins Ave., which is super close to Ocean Drive. I would recommend just walking around and exploring the Art Deco District. There are tons of cute coffee shops and pastel buildings. Everything is so photogenic! It was also such a beautiful day in South Beach with clear skies.

3) Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

Visiting Vizcaya was definitely one of the highlights of my trip! I have always wanted to visit because I love how lush the gardens are and because of the stunning architecture. There is also so much history to learn about.

Tip: they offer student discounts but you have to purchases tickets at the ticket office.

Vizcaya is also closed every Tuesday!

4) Wynwood Walls

I had so much fun taking pictures in front of all the different murals. Each one is so unique and I love all the different pops of color. This is a nice free activity to do!

Hannah and I ended our time at Wynwood with a stop at Coyo Taco. There was a line out the door at 12 pm on a Monday, but the wait was worth it. I got a shrimp burrito bowl and Hannah got pork tacos.

5) South Beach

And of course you can't go to Miami without going to the beach! South Beach wasn’t as crazy as I thought it was going to be, especially since we were there during spring break. The beach was actually pretty relaxing and I just enjoyed laying out in the sun with the sound of the waves in the background. Our friend Hollya also joined us for the last couple days of our trip!

I hope you enjoyed reading about my little adventure in Miami for spring break. I am truly grateful that I had the opportunity to go on a relaxing spring break with some of my best friends and I will always cherish these memories. Until next time, Miami!
